For Your Eyes Only, Airlie Beach Qld Australia 2016

For Your Eyes Only

I used to be a makeup artist and I love putting on eyes makeup for people, mainly female. Since photography taking over my life and it was an excuses to explore the world around me with my camera I have given up makeup. The reasons why I became a self taught makeup artist is another story for another time.

I photograph this graffiti art on a stop over of Airlie Beach. Another hot spot in Queensland for backpackers and holiday makers. The Great Barrier Reefs is accessible from here also. My plan was to see the reef from here, but the urged to see more of Australia than just the East coast made me went further.

My next trip to Queensland, I would cruise the Whitsundays at Airlie beach, just to tick off the travel bucket list. And I have a very long one that could take me a life time of travels to achieve everything. There's always new and exciting places on this blue planet we called Earth. So I might expand the list as I am ticking the old one off. Shouldn't you do the same?

Devils Marbles Sun Glazing, N.T. Australia 2016

Devil Marbles Sun Gazing

The Devils Marbles is a unique landscape where odd marble like shape rocks formations still creating new marbles. It is a wonderful site to be at during sunrise or sunset. I was there for both occasions and it was one of the highlights of my recent road trip.

There's a camping site behind the site which start to become very popular. The words had got out, so get to see it fast before too much commercialised ruined the raw and very unique camping experiences next to the Devils Marbles.

Cairns Queensland, Australia 2016

One of my goal on the recent road trip was to see the Great Barrier Reefs. As an Australian you must see this natural wonder of the world right? So that was my plan but the weather was not kind to me from the photo above. So I decided to revisit this spot next year. Great Barrier Reefs I will capture you. Need an underwater capability camera now. Still have till next year to get myself organise.

Gutter in the City, Sydney Australia 2016

I would never though I take photo of a gutter but when you go down low and photograph unusual angle. The city seems to be oddly strange and different. Shot this outside Queen Victoria Buildings or QVB as the locals like to referred to the building.

A Little Political Messages, Sydney Australia 2016

Since we're going to the poll soon, I though I share a few political messages that I shot yesterday. I was in Town Hall and I saw a demonstration, so I though why not take a few moment out of my days to see what's going on. I shot this messages that just to share some political view. It is my view? I'm not interested in any political activities, it doesn't effect my life. Doesn't matter who's in government it doesn't change my way of life any drastically.

We're sometime let the government control our life but in my opinion the only person that really could control your life is the one you look in the mirror every morning. Government can changes their policies, make many promises and hopefully they keep them. But it doesn't matter what they do, it is external to us. And if you look for changes in your life, then look inside for the answers.

If you look at the major part of your life then there are health, wealth, happiness and ofcourse good looks. If you spend your time study this major subjects then you will get it. And guess what it's all in your control, which is exciting isn't it?

Vivid Sydney 2016: Curtain of Lights

Curtains of Light

Another creative shot that probably 200 other photographers on the same they of Trey Ratcliff's Photowalk missed out. Photographers often obsessed with sharpness and the photos sometime can become boring and very clique especially at Mrs Macquarie's Chair. The best view on the Opera House and Harbour Bridge that thousands of them have been taken. I though I share some uniqueness that no other photographer can recreate, even myself cannot recreate the same photo ever again.

Just a little creativity. Vivid Sydney 2016

Just a little fun while on the field photographing Vivid Sydney 2016. The techniques called "Zoom Effect" and you have a great time explore other possibilities of a camera than your average snap shot. It's not to everyone taste but photography is an art form and art is very subjective.

Vivid Sydney 2016: Mrs Macquarie's Chair Light Painting

I always wanted to paint the rocks at Mrs Macqaurie's Chair. Finally during the last night of photograph the bridge and the opera house during Vivid Sydney that I managed to do it. A simple torch and a few gels in my bag makes it possible.

Vivid Sydney 2016 Sydney Town Hall

Another recognised icon in Sydney was illuminated during Vivid Sydney. It sits right on the busiest intersection in Sydney's CBD. I was on the opposite side of the street and simply enjoy the experience of being there. See the hectic people, the traffic jam and no one looks up and simply enjoy the scenery intrigued me.

Trey Ratcliff's Sydney Photowalk 2016

First time walking the streets of Sydney after a long road trip. Looking up around Winter creates a different mood in my city of Sydney. This shot was taken during Trey Ratcliff's Sydney photowalk. There was probably 200 people attending the event.

I didn't have a chance to meet Trey but he's my inspiration to travel and take the photos that capture those precious memories. I'm sure I'll meet him one day and interact with him. Maybe on a photo trip together. You never know!

Katoomba Street Art Walk, Katoomba NSW Australia

A surprised awaits me after the Winter Magic street parade. At the back of the main street in Katoomba there was a small but beautiful street art or graffiti as some people prefer to called it. This was commission by the council and the art on show was spectacular.

Why couldn't we have more of this around major cities. I know in Melbourne there is a Hosier Lane where graffiti artists showcase their work. In Newtown we have the backstreets of Newtown where there's similar work. It always attract tourists and in my opinion create better urban scenes for photographers and who isn't a photographer these days.

Vivid Sydney 2016 Darling Harbour

Vivid Sydney 2016 Darling Harbour by Travis Chau on 500px.com

Last night of Vivid Sydney and I'll miss it. There's a few places this year that I was not keen to photograph. I'm not sure I could be back in Sydney next year to photograph Vivid Sydney. But I think I have enough memory of Vivid to last me a long time.

Winter Magic 2016 Katoomba NSW Australia

Winter Magic 2016 Katoomba NSW Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

Back again for the Katoomba Winter Magic. Didn't stay for the whole day as I had another photowalk in Sydney with Trey Ratcliff. Very productive photography wise. I think I make at least 2000 exposures mainly timelapse of Vivid Sydney. Only one night left before another year of Vivid.

Anyway it always fun to be in the mountains for Winter Magic. The people are friendly and I actually met my accountant lecturer from UTS. We had a good chat. It is fascinating how the world works. Last year I met another lecturer from my college at ACNT.  Katoomba is a fascinating destination overall.

Coober Pedy Old Timers Mine, South Australia

Coober Pedy Old Timers Mine, South Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

Passed by this mysterious town on my way to Sydney. Nearly everything is underground even your hair dresser. The Old timers Mine is a very fascinating place to explore the old ways of mining mine. How hard the old miners have to endure to make a living.

Lemon Tree Passage Sunrise, NSW Australia

Lemon Tree Passage Sunrise, NSW Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

On my way to Queensland I spent one night at a Couch Surfer host in Lemon Tree Passage. A wonderful couple from America. They were well travel as well and the stories they shared with me really inspired me to travel further and longer. This shot was taken a short walk from their place. I wish I could stay a little longer to explore this particular of NSW. There's always next time.

If you don't know what is Couch Surfing, I encourage you to explore it further. A great way to meet new people and travels in my opinion. Hope you have great time CS. Maybe one day you could host me on my travels. And I could share my stories with you to inspire you to do the same.

Vivid Sydney 2016 Custom House

Vivid Sydney 2016 Custom House by Travis Chau on 500px.com

This year show was not as spectacular as last year. But it better than a custom house without any light show on it. Don't take my word for it, see it for yourself.

Vivid Sydney 2016 CBD Zoom Effect

Vivid Sydney 2016 CBD Zoom Effect by Travis Chau on 500px.com

Zoom Effect? What is that? Simply you are using a zoom lens and when you take a photo on a tripod you zoom in or out. Experiment a little and you're be surprised of the results. That's it, a very simple effect that is one of the oldest trick in photography.

Vivid Sydney 2016 Opera House

Vivid Sydney 2016 Opera House by Travis Chau on 500px.com

I was on the road out in the outback when Vivid Sydney was on, but I don't want to miss this year show. So from Ulluru I drove all the way back to Sydney for this shot here. Basically I have photograph two of the most iconic Australia landmarks in a about a few weeks. Life of a travel visual teller.

Ulluru Ayres Rock N.T. Australia 2016

Ulluru Ayres Rock NT Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

One of my item in my bucket list was ticked off, Ulluru or Ayres Rock was one of the those. Every Australians should at one time see this marvel in roughly in the middle of Australia. If you really keen then a road trip to the Red Centre is an adventure in itself.

Only have one night at this ancient site. I save it for next time I think. Don't know how long that going to be but the world is too big and the endless list that I have will keep me going for a very long time.

Vivid Sydney 2016 Royal Botanical Gardens

Vivid Sydney 2016 Royal Botanical Gardens by Travis Chau on 500px.com

One of the new additions to this year Vivid Sydney is the Royal Botanical Gardens and it also coincided with the garden 200 years anniversary. I've been to the gardens many time but never at night. Usually the garden closed after sunset so the public usually don't have a chance to access to the garden after dark. So it was a great opportunity that I didn't want to miss out. It was pretty crowded as you might expected but I got the shots that I was hoping to get.

Vivid Sydney 2016 Blurred Bridge

Vivid Sydney 2016 Blurred Bridge by Travis Chau on 500px.com

Just want to tried something different for the audiences. The view from Mrs Macquarie's Chair has been shot to death. I just want to experiment a little bit. The view from here is the best in Sydney in my opinion either sunset or viewing the city skyline.

Vivid Sydney 2016: Kirribilli View

Vivid Sydney Kirribili View by Travis Chau on 500px.com

Another shot from the north of the Harbour Bridge. This year the lighting is on the eastern side of the Harbour Bridge. So the shot was very different from the previous year. There's probably two more angles that I need to capture when the lighting is on the eastern side. Have to make an effort to get to those place now.

Vivid Sydney 2016 Sydney Harbour Bridge

Vivid Sydney 2016 Sydney Harbour Bridge by Travis Chau on 500px.com

Winter is an exciting time for cityscape photographer in Sydney. The town is transformed into lighting spectaculars. Usually it goes for two weeks in the past but due to the popularity of this event the organisers has extended this year to three weeks.

Perfect as it rain usually around this time every year. It certainly makes great photography but not for the family and tourists that simply want to enjoy the occasion. If you're ever come to Sydney, make sure you schedule around Vivid Sydney. Sydney in my biased opinion becomes the centre of the Universe.

Rainbow Beach QLD Australia 2016

Rainbow Beach QLD Australia 2016 by Travis Chau on 500px.com

I was passing by and have to revisited Rainbow Beach again. I joined the tour to Fraser Island last year and it was wonderful. Since I was on a tour the time for yourself is limited. And I usually photograph my subject in good lights. So sunrise or sunset. I just missed sunset.

I spend one night sleeping in my car at this location. Not next to the beach as it was prohibited. I went to the national park near by, my car was stuck in the sand. You definitely need a Four Wheel Drive if you want to explore Fraser Island and the surrounding National Parks. Luckily for me someone gave me a hand and I was out of the sand.

Sky High Courtship, NSW Australia 2016

Sky High Courtship, NSW Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

When you're on the road there were some discoveries that out of the normal tourist attractions. Sky High Camp Ground was one of those. With the view on one side to the Pacific and the other side was mountains view. A spectacular resting spot on my way to Queensland. A great spot for viewing sunset or sunrise. A perfect place for couple in a courtship.

Airlie Beach, QLD Australia 2016

Airlie Beach QLD Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

One of my goal on the recent road trip was to see the Whitsunday Islands. Unfortunately I can only get a glimpsed of it. Next year when I have more time and money I'll definitely stays longer and explore this wonder of the Queensland coast. That's the problem I haven't sorted out yet. How to be on the road all the time and not have to worry about funding. I know the answer but it doesn't happen overnight unfortunately.

Outback Big Sunset, Stuart Hwy South Australia 2016

Outback Big Sunset, South Australia Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

The most memorable thing about going out to the desert or outback as we call in Australia is the big sky or the endless sky. This shot was on a rest area along Stuart Highway.

Misty Morning Gaydnah Queensland Australia 2016

Misty Morning Gaydnah QLD Australia by Travis Chau on 500px.com

To fund my road trip up in Queensland I took a job as a packer in a Citrus farm in Gaydnah. Sometime in the morning you get some interesting shots. I always have a camera with me so I never missed any photo opportunities.

Living and working in Gaydnah for 8 weeks to fund the big road trip was a very interesting. I work out that working 8 weeks and travel/holiday for two weeks, that was a good ratio of work and play 3:1 ratio. There's so much to see in the world that an average annual holiday just not do it for you. If you need inspirations for travel, get a hold of the book "1000 places to see before you die"by Patricia Schultz. You find many interesting places that could fill you imaginations. And a 3:1 ratio of work to play could possibly that you there sooner.

My plan is to work in Sydney for 3 months and spend one month in Asia. I haven't decided which country to visit yet. But definitely South East Asia, wish me luck!

Devils Marbles Under The Stars, N.T. Australia

Devils Marble Under The Stars by Travis Chau on 500px.com

I'm back from a long road trip so see Australia. I'll say now that I have seen 20% of Australia. Western Australia is the only States in Australia that I haven't seen. But that is a goal for next year. A photographer friend has a dream to travel around Australia next year. I'll probably join him for the Western Australia journey.

I slept under the stars in my car to get this shot. The rocks formation was spectacular during sunset and sunrise but at night time with the Milky Way came out the whole experiences of being in the ancient landscape was one of the memories that will cherish for years to come. Enjoy!
